Based on FR 56. The date of birth recorded in your service book is the one that counts. Extension of service beyond superannuation is allowed only in the cases listed in FR 56(d).

How the retirement date is worked out

FR 56(a) says every Government servant retires on the afternoon of the last day of the month in which he attains the age of sixty years, and that a Government servant whose date of birth is the first of a month retires on the afternoon of the last day of the preceding month. Workmen in industrial or work-charged establishments also retire at 60 under FR 56(b). Confirmed

Notional increment for 30 June and 31 December retirees

If you retire on 30 June and your increment falls on 1 July, or on 31 December with an increment on 1 January, DoPT’s OM of 20 May 2025 allows that increment notionally, provided you have rendered the qualifying service for it with satisfactory work and conduct. It counts only for calculating pension, not for gratuity, leave encashment or commutation, and the higher pension is payable from 1 May 2023 for third parties (earlier only for those covered by court orders). Confirmed

The calculator shows the notional increment only when your retirement date and increment date line up this way. Your last actual increment is the most recent 1 January or 1 July on or before your retirement date, assuming no extraordinary leave postponed it. Our reading

Service and gratuity periods

If you enter your date of joining, the calculator counts service from that day to the afternoon of your retirement date, and converts it into completed six-monthly periods for gratuity (a fraction of three months or more counts as a period, and at most 66 count). Qualifying service can be shorter than this if there were breaks, extraordinary leave without a medical certificate or dies non, so treat it as a guide. Estimate

What is the retirement age of Central Government employees?

Sixty years under FR 56(a). You retire on the afternoon of the last day of the month in which you attain 60. Doctors covered by FR 56(bb) retire at 62, or at 65 if they opt for the specified duties, and some nursing teaching faculty at 65.

When do I retire if my date of birth is the 1st of a month?

On the afternoon of the last day of the previous month. For example, a date of birth of 1 August 1966 means retirement on 31 July 2026, and 1 January 1967 means 31 December 2026.

Do I retire on my 60th birthday?

No. Unless you were born on the 1st, you work until the afternoon of the last day of the month in which you turn 60. Someone born on 15 August 1966 retires on 31 August 2026.

Will I get a notional increment if I retire on 30 June or 31 December?

Yes, if your increment is due the next day (1 July or 1 January) and you have the qualifying service for it with satisfactory work and conduct. Under DoPT’s OM of 20 May 2025 it counts only for calculating pension, not for gratuity or other benefits.

Can a Central Government employee get an extension beyond 60?

Only in the cases allowed by FR 56(d): for example up to three months for budget work or a committee about to wind up, up to 62 for medical or scientific specialists and up to 64 for eminent scientists, in public interest.
